Adult Care Worker – Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship

About The Course

As an Adult Care Worker you will form part of the front-line staff who help adults with care and support needs, to achieve their personal goals and live as independently and safely as possible. To work in care is to make a positive difference to someones life when they are faced with physical, practical, social, emotional or intellectual challenges.

You will need to have the right values and behaviours developing competences and skills to provide high quality compassionate care and support. Job roles are varied and include residential or nursing homes, domiciliary care, day centres, a person’s own home or some clinical healthcare settings.

As an apprentice you will learn about adult care practices, principles and standards, including;

  • care planning
  • duty of care
  • professional boundaries and individual dignity and respect
  • supporting individual physical and mental well-being to help people live as independently as possible
  • safeguarding including addressing personal rights and safety, dealing with abuse, comments and complaints and whistle-blowing
  • communication skills including active listening, showing empathy and verbal, non-verbal and written communication
  • health and safety practices and standards within a care environment including dealing with accidents, fire safety, hazardous substances and infection control

Duration: 13 Months
Location: Workplace and the institute

The course will equip you with a variety of skills and knowledge to provide front-line care for vulnerable adults. This will include:

  • How to contribute towards the development of a care plan, taking your lead from the individual and their preferences
  • Learning about ‘Duty of Care’ and what that is in practice
  • Understanding professional boundaries and individual dignity
  • How to support an individual’s physical and mental well-being
  • Safeguarding and how to recognise unsafe practises in the workplace
  • The importance of communication and active listening 
  • Being expert in current up to date health and safety practises and standards, including what to do if there is sudden injury or accident

You will need:

  • To be aged 16 or older
  • To be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week with 20% of your normal working hours set aside for you to complete your training and study
  • 5 GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English and Maths or Functional Skills at Level 1 in English and Maths

All applicants must have an interview and assessment in English and Maths to confirm that the apprenticeship is suitable for them.

Employers may also set additional entry requirements, as a prerequisite to working with them.

Apprenticeships are assessed by classroom study coursework and assessments along with on-the-job practicals.
On completion of this course, you can progress onto further study in this field or into a career in the health and social care sector.

WHEN SHOULD I APPLY?
We recommend you apply at least three months before the programme starts to guarantee your place. The application form will take approximately 15 to 30 minutes to complete.

WHEN WILL I HEAR BACK FROM YOU?
We’ll acknowledge receipt of your application by email within 48 hours, if it’s received during normal working hours (Mon-Fri – 09:00-18:00 GMT). We will review and respond to your application within two working days. We do this in order of receipt and acceptance is not automatic.

CAN I RESERVE A PLACE?

WHAT ARE YOUR LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS?
The programme is taught in English, so a good working knowledge of the language is essential. If English is not your first language, we may ask you for evidence of your proficiency.
