Healthcare: Support Worker – Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship

About The Course

This apprenticeship is for anyone wanting to work as a Healthcare Support Worker who wants to provide treatment and care for patients. Healthcare support workers work in a range of settings e.g. outpatients, A&E and community.

Healthcare support workers work as part of a team providing high quality and compassionate care to individuals. You will carry out well-defined routine clinical duties  like monitoring an individual’s conditions (by checking things like blood pressure, temperature or weight), checking on their overall progress, comfort and well-being.

 You will prepare individuals for healthcare activities carried out by other members of the healthcare team, looking after them before, during and/or after those activities in line with their care plan. You will also carry out non-clinical duties and, depending on where you work, this could include things like keeping records, making beds, tidying up your work area, returning or cleaning the equipment used during a clinical activity. You will be able to address straightforward problems in your day to day work, reporting concerns and changes to the appropriate person in a timely manner

In your qualification you will learn to: 

  • communicate effectively with individuals, their families, carers and healthcare practitioners using a range of techniques, keeping information confidential
  • handle information (record, report and store information) related to individuals in line with local and national policies
  • support individuals with long term conditions, frailty and end of life care
  • identify and respond to signs of pain or discomfort

You will also cover

  • Dementia, cognitive issues, mental health
  • Basic life support, Safeguarding and Duty of Care
  • Health, safety and security

You will need:

  • To be aged 16 or older
  • To be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week with 20% of your normal working hours set aside for you to complete your training and study
  • To be working at Level 2 in English and Maths

All applicants must have an interview and assessment in English and Maths to confirm that the apprenticeship is suitable for them.

Employers may also set additional entry requirements, as a prerequisite to working with them.

Apprenticeships are assessed by classroom study coursework and assessments along with on-the-job practicals.
On completion of this course, you can progress onto further study in this field or into a career in the health and social care sector

WHEN SHOULD I APPLY?
We recommend you apply at least three months before the programme starts to guarantee your place. The application form will take approximately 15 to 30 minutes to complete.

WHEN WILL I HEAR BACK FROM YOU?
We’ll acknowledge receipt of your application by email within 48 hours, if it’s received during normal working hours (Mon-Fri – 09:00-18:00 GMT). We will review and respond to your application within two working days. We do this in order of receipt and acceptance is not automatic.

CAN I RESERVE A PLACE?

WHAT ARE YOUR LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS?
The programme is taught in English, so a good working knowledge of the language is essential. If English is not your first language, we may ask you for evidence of your proficiency.
